Squirrels Nassau County, Long Island, NY

There are two species of squirrels that reside in Nassau County, Long Island attics. The Eastern Gray Squirrel, which is a diurnal animal and the Flying Squirrel, which is active at night. The Eastern Grey Squirrel is the largest tree squirrel found in Long Island, New York and is the most often seen squirrel. Averaging only about two ounces, the nocturnal Flying Squirrels are the smallest squirrels found on Long Island. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is found in woodland, parkland, suburban and urban habitats. The fundamental requirement to make a habitat appropriate for a gray squirrel is a predictable abundance of food. These opportunistic omnivorous rodents feed primarily on the nuts of forest trees. They also consume tree bark, mushrooms, seeds, berries, acorns, buds, apples, caterpillars, tree flowers, baby birds and insects. This squirrel does not hibernate, but instead relies on their fat reserves and the large amount of food that it hoards for future consumption. This rodent plays a significant role in reforestation, by hiding nuts and seeds in hundreds of different locations, which is referred to as scatter hoarding. Scatter hoarding guarantees that even if some of the food is found and eaten by other wildlife, enough will remain for the squirrel. Numerous squirrel caches are never found and sprout, growing into trees. The gray squirrel has predominantly gray fur, but it can also be brown or black in color. Black squirrels, which are a melanistic subgroup of the Eastern Gray Squirrel have a higher cold tolerance and can frequently be seen in Nassau County, NY. Its bushy tail is used in maintaining balance while it jumps between tree branches, or runs along power lines. Gray squirrels construct nests in tree hollows and in the forks of trees, made up of dry leaves and twigs. They also nest in attics, chimneys, garages and sheds of Nassau County dwellings, where they are regarded as pests, and a fire hazard due to their tendency to gnaw on electrical wires. Occasionally a squirrel will come down an uncapped furnace flue and end up in the basement of a Long Island homeowner. A squirrel is a rodent, which means gnawing mammal. A rodent is distinguished as having a single pair of continuously growing teeth in each of its upper and lower jaws. Rodents use their sharp teeth to gnaw food, dig burrows and defend themselves. The two long pair of teeth are used by a squirrel when gnawing its way into the attic of a Nassau County, Long Island residence. Squirrels will frequently gnaw holes in fascia board and soffits to gain access to the attics of Nassau County, Long Island homes. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is most active in attics at dawn and dusk. During the early morning hours, squirrels can be heard exiting the attic and in the later part of the day they can be heard entering it. So, if you are hearing scratching, running, scampering and chirping noises in the ceiling during daylight hours, you most likely have grey squirrels in the attic. In Nassau County, Long Island gray squirrels breed twice a year, in the Spring and in the Fall. Ordinarily, squirrels give birth to four to six pups, but this number can be as high as eight. Gray squirrel pups are weaned at about seven weeks of age and leave the nest after ten weeks. Gray squirrels can begin breeding when they are 5 1/2 months old and have a maximum life expectancy of thirteen years in the wild. Predators of the Eastern Gray Squirrel include raccoons, snakes, red fox, owls and hawks.
